That’ll be the day
Another expression with “day” in English is:
That’ll be the day
It is used to say that we don’t believe something is going to happen. If it does happen then that “day” will be a day for celebration.
- Mike: Dad, I promise that I will get up early every day to help you in the garden.
- Tom: Yeh, yeh! That’ll be the day! I’ll believe it when I see it!
- Mike: Dad, please! Give me a chance to show you I’ve changed.
- Tom: Of course Mike. Do you want me to wake you up tomorrow?
The expression “that’ll be the day” is the title of a song written and sung by Buddy Holly. There was also a film with the same name which stars David Essex and Ringo Starr
