First Conditional with the imperative
5- An imperative can also be used in the result clause of First Conditional sentences.
Compare sentences with will and with imperative:
If my homework is finished, I will watch the TV.
(my intention is to watch the TV if I finish my homework)
If you finish your homework, clean your bedroom.
(this is an instruction … when you finish your homework you have to clean your bedroom)
- If you finish painting the bedroom, start the bathroom
- If you arrive on time, come to the meeting
- If it rains, take an umbrella
- If the food is cold, put it in the microwave
- Ask your teacher if you can’t find the answer
May and Might instead of Will in First Conditional sentences
