Using the Past Perfect https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2014/using-the-past-perfect/ https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2014/using-the-past-perfect/#comments Sat, 26 Apr 2014 17:27:53 +0000 https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/?p=3371  How we use the Past Perfect

The Past Perfect tells us about something that happened before another time in the past

When I arrived at the cinema the film had already started

There are two events, here in chronological order:

The film started (at 8.00 pm)

I arrived at the cinema (at 8.10 pm)

If we focus our attention on: I arrived at the cinema this will mean that The film started is an action or event anterior to that

Another example would be:

John first met Lucy at a conference in 1998

John saw her again at Heathrow airport in London last August

If we focus our attention on last August we would get the following sentence:

When John saw the tall, elegant woman at Heathrow airport last August, he remembered that he had met her some years before.

Learning English does not need to be a lottery https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2013/learning-english-does-not-need-to-be-a-lottery/ https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2013/learning-english-does-not-need-to-be-a-lottery/#comments Sun, 30 Jun 2013 09:39:34 +0000 https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/?p=2999

Three effective ways to learn to speak English well:

You do not need to keep trying different methods of learning English

Every year do you try something different? But you still haven’t found the best way for you to learn English.

You started with a non-native English teacher who explained everything clearly in your native language.

Have you tried English home study courses?

Have you tried English courses online?

Have you done in company classes?

Maybe it would be better to try another English language school

Maybe you have attempted to find a native English teacher

Then maybe you bought audio classes or podcast courses

Next summer perhaps you should go away and do an English course abroad

This list could go on and on

Let’s make things very clear:

Everybody can learn a language, we all learn at least one when we are babies.

Everybody can learn two or three or more languages and do it without studying or effort. Yes, language learning without effort

So………. What is the best way to learn English? To learn to understand English and to speak English is not a lottery. Every year thousands of people do it and do it well.

There are only three effective ways to learn the English language well.

  • 1.Grow up in an English speaking country and go to a school with the teaching in English

  • 2. Grow up in a non-English speaking country with native English parents or go to an international school where all the classes are in English

Ooooh! Ooooooh? So if it’s too late for you to be able to do either number one or number two …………. Do not despair, there is another solution.

  • 3. Try and copy as many of the daily activities of the people (children) in situation 1 and 2. Only by regular contact with the English language, every week and all year can anyone realistically hope to attain an adequate level that allows communication in English.

Why don’t we – suggestions https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2013/why-dont-we-suggestions/ https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2013/why-dont-we-suggestions/#comments Mon, 10 Jun 2013 06:15:25 +0000 https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/?p=585 “Why don’t we …?” for suggestions.
  • Be careful with this ………. It is a question ……….

But it’s not really a question that needs you to answer “Because ……..”

notice the form is: why don’t we + infinitive

It is also possible with:

  • why don’t you  …?
  • why don’t I ….?
  • why don’t they……?
  • Why doesn’t she….?

  • Trevor: I’m not working this weekend, why don’t we go to the coast until Sunday night?
  • Tracey: That’s a good idea. We could stay at my sister’s.
  • Trevor: Brilliant! Why don’t you phone her now to check it’s OK with her?

  • Helen: Mike! It’s raining again, I don’t fancy going cycling now!
  • Mike : Yeh! Never mind. Why don’t we watch that DVD you bought last week?
  • Helen: OK. We could go on our bikes tomorrow.

As you can see in the examples, this is a normal Present Simple question using the negative form of do (don’t or doesn’t). The verb form is Present but it refers to a future situation, usually a near future.

Other ways of making suggestions in the English language are

Let’s ……. let’s make a suggestion

How about ……..? how about making a suggestion?

We could ………

There isn’t one form that is better than another. Choose one and try and use it when you speak, write etc. Be careful to use the correct form of the verb.

Excited or exciting? What is the difference between -ed and -ing? https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2013/excited-or-exciting/ https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2013/excited-or-exciting/#comments Tue, 26 Feb 2013 22:54:57 +0000 https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/?p=378 Bored or boring?

Go to FREE language and grammar exercises with -ed and -ing forms HERE

There are a number of adjectives that are formed from the past participle or the present participle of a verb

Examples are:

Interested/interesting, bored/boring, excited/exciting, stimulated/stimulating

Why do we use one or another?

The adjective with ed tells us about how a person feels about something.

The adjective with ing describes the person or things that have caused that feeling:

  • My Maths teacher, Mr. Smith, doesn’t like children and doesn’t like teaching. His classes are very boring and the students are bored when they are in his class.
  • Mr.Harrison teaches History, he loves his subject and wants to transmit his feelings to his students. His classes are very interesting and stimulating, the students  are never bored in his classes.
  • My children are very excited at the moment because we are all going skiing next weekend for the first time. They think that skiing must be a very exciting activity.

Remember that people can be boring but only if they cause other people to feel bored.

  • She talks about the her neighbours all day. She’s so boring.
  • I was bored at the party, the music was bad and I knew nobody NOT I was very boring at the party so I went home.

Here are some more adjectives that can have both an ‘-ed’ and an ‘-ing’ form

    • amused
    • amusing
    • annoyed
    • annoying
    • confused
    • confusing
    • disappointed
    • disappointing
    • exhausted
    • exhausting
    • frightened
    • frightening
    • satisfied
    • satisfying
    • shocked
    • shocking

Remember the ing form of the adjective (exciting, boring etc) is nothing to do with the Present Continuous verb form

English is English, which English is best? https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2012/english-is-english-is-best/ Mon, 29 Oct 2012 19:01:37 +0000 https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/?p=2008 English is English
  • There are variations of English around Great Britain and around the world – but the essence of the language is the same.
  • An Australian can be understood in London, New York or Durban

But it is absolutely essential to remember that:

It is not French, Italian, Chinese, Swahili, Spanish, Russian or any other language.

You cannot expect that one verb form (tense) in the English language will be the exact equivalent of a verb form in your own language.

Or that one translation of an English word will be the same translation in all situations.

English verb forms are relatively easy to form but sometimes it is difficult to know when to use one form or another. It is important to get to know the basics of  English Grammar but please do not get obsessed with grammar. The most important part of learning a language is the practical day to day understanding and communicating in English

Beware of having a non-native English teacher,  they could possibly make the same wrong assumptions about the use of language as you!

But not all native English people will know why they use one verb form or another ……… but they will usually use grammar correctly and will know when you use the wrong form.

Receiving a good model of English is very important.

English grammar – its importance https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2012/english-grammar-its-importance/ https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/2012/english-grammar-its-importance/#comments Mon, 29 Oct 2012 12:54:17 +0000 https://learnenglishlanguagewell.com/?p=2003

If we want to speak English well, understand the English language well  or write English well

it is necessary to find out how to understand English grammar.

How we use English verb forms (tenses) is essential to developing good communication in English. Effective use of the English language is the key to good communication.

To learn English well does not necessarily mean that you have to exclusively study English grammar:

Studying grammar is one option – it is one that must be accompanied by regular contact with written and spoken language.

Most of the millions of native speakers of English around the world never studied English grammar. They acquired their grammar at an early age through regular access to a good model of language.

I am not going to talk about how we construct the verb form but I want to emphasise the need to access the basic concepts of how these grammatical forms are used by native English speakers.

Sometimes people try and complicate English Grammar . English grammar has evolved over many hundreds of years to become a simplified version of what went before. The basic rules of verb forms (tenses) are very simple, they are perhaps different from your own language but they are not difficult. Look here for more information on English verb forms

Read the article Is grammar important ?

After learning the basic verb forms and using them correctly, English becomes more complicated because it is difficult to find rules to follow. It is at this stage that it is essential to have regular, daily, contact with the language.

//

I have posted and will continue to post many articles showing how to form and use English verb forms, in the links below you will find practical lessons and practice tests for the main areas of grammar that you need.
